PONTE'S AUTOCARE Helps You Decipher the Menu Board: Part 2

Delaware service centers have a menu board that lists the services they provide. Some Wilmington drivers may not be familiar with all of the items on the board so here is a quick description of some of the typical services that might be listed.PONTE'S AUTOCARE fuel system cleaning: Over time, the vehicle fuel system gets gum and varnish built up. A fuel system cleaning gets rid of that and cleans out the fuel injectors. Saves gas, by the way.PONTE'S AUTOCARE headlamp replacement: Halogen and standard headlamps gradually fade. It's usually good to change them every year or so.PONTE'S AUTOCARE inspections: Wilmington drivers get inspections for many reasons. Maybe they're going on a trip or just want to make sure their vehicle's ready for a Delaware summer or winter. Maybe they just bought a used vehicle and want to give it the once over. Wilmington Drivers: Is It Time to Replace Your PCV Valve?

Wilmington Drivers: Is It Time to Replace Your PCV Valve?

The crankcase is the lower part of the engine where the crankshaft is housed and where the engine oil lives. The crankshaft is connected to the pistons that power the engine. When you are diving around Wilmington, fuel is burned in your vehicle engine, it pushes the pistons down and the crankshaft rotates and sends power to the transmission. Some of the explosive gases from combustion squeeze past the pistons and down into the crankcase. Now this gas is about 70% unburned fuel. If it were allowed to remain in the crankcase, it would contaminate the oil and quickly turn it to sludge. Sludge is like Vaseline and clogs passages in the engine, leading to damage. Also, the pressure build up would blow out seals and gaskets. So in the old days, there was just a hose that vented the crankcase out into the air. Obviously, not good for our air quality in Wilmington, Delaware.Enter the PCV valve. It's a small, one-way valve that lets out the gases from the crankcase and routes them back ... read more

The Right Fluids for Your Vehicle

The current vehicles in the market have over a century of engineering behind them. They have evolved into complex and powerful machines. Developments in their engines, however, have coincided with advances in many other vehicle components, including the fluids. It's up to people in Wilmington to always use the right type of fluid for their vehicle. Your service advisor and your owner's manual are resources for auto advice on exactly what types of fluid your vehicle needs. Improper fluids can damage your vehicle and void your warranty. Some of the fluids that have changed significantly in recent years are cooling system fluid, brake fluid, transmission fluid and motor oil. Each of these comes in many varieties now, and it's hard to know exactly which one your vehicle needs.Cooling systems were once made of iron, steel and rubber. One coolant could be used to protect all of these materials. But new cooling systems have components ... read more

Tire Maintenance in Wilmington

With the recent focus in the Wilmington area on improving fuel economy, we've been told how important it is to maintain our tire pressure.Wilmington drivers know that tires wear out, but we want to make them last as long as possible because they're not cheap to replace. In addition to saving gas, properly inflated tires last longer. Underinflated tires will wear out more quickly. Some people in Wilmington wonder if they should add a few extra pounds of pressure when they fill up their tires. Bad idea. In fact, there are very good reasons not to overinflate your tires. For one, the middle of the tread will wear unevenly because the full tread is not contacting the road properly. That also adversely affects your handling. Stop by PONTE'S AUTOCARE to see about tire maintenance for your vehicle. Clean Air for Your Engine: Engine Air Filters In Wilmington

Every Wilmington car owner who has taken their car in for an oil change has been told that their engine air filter's dirty. Here's what goes into the determination of when to change the filter: First, your vehicle owner's manual will have a recommendation of when the filter should be replaced. Now, most air filters purchased in Wilmington don't cost a lot to replace. It's just that Delaware people hate getting caught with an unexpected expense. On the plus side, though, changing a dirty air filter at PONTE'S AUTOCARE can often save enough on gas to pay for itself before your next oil change in Wilmington. Think about a dirty furnace filter in your Wilmington home. When it's all clogged up, enough clean air can't get through. In your vehicle, that means that your engine can't get as much air as it needs to burn the fuel efficiently. So it makes do with less air and has to use more gas to move your vehicle around Wilmington roads. Your vehicle actually needs about ... read more

Fuel Saving Tip: Tire Pressure Saves Fuel in Wilmington

Underinflated tires waste gas for lots of folks in the Wilmington area. Think how hard it is to walk in sand – you just have to work harder because of the resistance. When your tires don't have enough air in them, their rolling resistance is dramatically increased and it simply takes more gas to get from here to there.Always check your tire pressure when you gas up at one of our local Wilmington service stations. If they're low – even just a little bit – bring them up to proper pressure. There's a sticker on the inside of your driver's door that gives the manufacturer's recommended tire pressure. And don't rely on your tire pressure monitoring system to alert you to when you need more air. The TPMS system is set to warn you when pressure drops 20 percent below recommendations. That's severely underinflated and you needed more air a long time ago. And if you have a slow leak – get it fixed right away at PONTE'S AUTOCARE ... read more

The Straight and Narrow: Power Steering Service at PONTE'S AUTOCARE

Service to a vehicle's power steering system is part of preventive maintenance for  Wilmington auto owners. This system provides power to the steering wheel so you can turn it with ease. Without power steering, all of the power to turn your vehicle's wheels would have to come from you.The central element of most power steering systems is a pump. The pump pressurizes the power steering fluid, and it is this pressure that provides auxiliary steering power. A belt connected to the engine usually powers the pump, although some systems use an electric pump. Some newer vehicles have an electric motor that directly provides the power steering boost.Pressurized fluid moves from the pump to the steering gear through a high-pressure hose. A low-pressure hose returns fluid to the pump. Power steering fluid cleans, cools and lubricates the system.Wilmington drivers should remember that fluid levels in the power steering system should be checked at every ... read more

Battery Basics for Wilmington

Battery Basics for Wilmington

It's important for Wilmington drivers to know battery basics. First, let's talk about which is harder on a battery – hot or cold Delaware weather. Most Wilmington area drivers think it's cold weather because that's when we call on our batteries to have enough power to start a cold vehicle engine. However, heat does more damage to a battery than cold. Truth is, our batteries start to die a little from day one. Keeping a full charge slows the process, which is hard with short Wilmington trips because the alternator doesn't have time to fully recharge the battery from starting the engine. Wilmington drivers can top off the charge with a computer controlled battery charger – say, once a month in the summer and every three months during the winter. As far as how long a battery will last, statistics show that 70% have given up the ghost within four years. By that time, they aren't capable of taking a full charge like they ... read more

Tire Tread Depth for Wilmington, Delaware Drivers

Driving on bald tires is like playing roulette. Though you may be fine today, eventually your luck is going to run out.The Feds don't have any laws for tread depth, but 42 of the states, and all of Canada, do have regulations. They consider 2/32 of an inch to be the minimum legal tread depth. Two other states, including California, consider 1/32 to be the minimum and six states have no standards at all. Call us at PONTE'S AUTOCARE; (just call 302-478-9786) to find out what your requirements are in the Wilmington, Delaware, area.Since 1968, U.S. law has required that a raised bar be molded across all tires. When tires are worn enough that this bar becomes visible, there's just 2/32 inch/1.6 mm of tread left. But does that older standard give Wilmington vehicles enough safety?Consider this: Consumer Reports recommends tire replacement when tread reaches 4/32 inch/3.2 mm. And the recommendation is backed by some very compelling studies. Now before we go into the stu ... read more
