Make Your Battery Last

Today's report from PONTE'S AUTOCARE is on vehicle batteries, why they die and what we can do to lengthen their life. Most of us have had a dead battery at one time or another. In fact, it would be very unusual if you hadn't. You may be surprised to learn that only 30 percent of Wilmington vehicle batteries last for 48 months. Now that's an average. How long a battery lasts depends on many factors. You may not know that one of the biggest factors is the temperature where you live and drive around in Delaware. You might suppose that cold weather was harder on batteries because it takes more power to crank a cold engine, but the opposite is actually true. For more information on your battery, please visit us:PONTE'S AUTOCARE2401 Concord PikeWilmington, Delaware 19803302-478-9786 Batteries in very cold climates have a life expectancy of 51 months as opposed to 30 months in very warm climates. Fuel Filter Service in Wilmington, Delaware

There are a surprising number of small, inexpensive parts that can lead to expensive engine damage when they fail. They may not be easy to remember because it is a long list, but your service center at PONTE'S AUTOCARE can help you know what's scheduled to be taken care of.Some of us in Wilmington, Delaware, really don't look forward to going in for an oil change and then getting a list of the other things the manufacturer recommends. But automotive maintenance is all about prevention and addressing small problems before they get big. Breathe Deep With Your Cabin Air Filter

Bad air quality while you're driving around Wilmington is nothing to sneeze at. But seriously, more and more vehicles these days come equipped with a cabin air filter. Since they're fairly new on the scene, a lot of folks don't know about them yet. These filters clean the air in the passenger compartment, or cabin, of your car or truck. They do the same job as the furnace filter you have at home. They can filter out particles as small as three microns. By contrast, a grain of sand is about 200 microns. So your cabin air filter can clean out dust, pollution, pollen and spores to keep the air in your car nice and clean. And just like your furnace filter, they need to be replaced when they get dirty. Check your owner's manual or ask your service advisor at PONTE'S AUTOCARE, but they typically need to be replaced at around 12,000 to 15,000 miles (19,000-24,000 kilometers). The filter is usually either under the hood or under the dashboard. Some are a little tricky to get to, so you ... read more

On Board Diagnostics for Your Engine

Starting in 1996, PONTE'S AUTOCARE service technicians have been able to use a standardized diagnostic system to help determine what is wrong with a vehicle. This diagnostic system works in tandem with the Engine Control Modules for each vehicle's engine. The Engine Control Module is a computer that monitors and controls many engine functions.Sensors throughout a vehicle send readings to the Engine Control Module. These readings help the computer make adjustments in various vehicle systems to allow for constantly changing driving conditions and even to compensate for minor problems. However, if the computer encounters a situation it can't adjust for, it turns on the Check Engine light. (The Check Engine light is called the “service engine soon” light on some vehicles.)If the Check Engine light is burning steadily, it indicates a problem that needs to be taken care of soon. If it is flashing, however, the vehicle needs immed ... read more
